The Great Crested Grebe is a delightful bird with a sophisticated, elongated body shape. It’s hard not to notice its striking appearance. During the breeding season, adults bear unmistakable double black crests behind the eyes, coupled with characteristic rufous cheeks. The head and neck are colored in dark brown to black hues, while the back and upperwings are colored in darker tones. The body and underwings, on the other hand, are pale gray to white. Young Grebes have striped, black-and-white heads. Both sexes appear similar, but females tend to be slightly smaller.

The Great Crested Grebe has a length ranging between 46cm to 51cm (18-20 inches) and wingspan between 59cm to 73cm (23-29 inches). They can weigh between 0.9 kg and 1.5 kg (2–3.3 lbs), with males usually being heavier.

Great Crested Grebes are found across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. They prefer freshwater habitats such as lakes, reservoirs, and ponds, and occasionally venture into coastal waters in winter.
