Black-headed Heron

1. Bird Name
The bird in focus is the Black-headed Heron. Its scientific (Latin) name is Ardea melanocephala.

2. Appearance
The Black-headed Heron is indeed an elegant species. It characteristically has a black cap and back, which offers an impressive contrast to its snowy white underparts and grey wings. Its legs are strong and long, with a light grey color while its bill is yellow with a black tip. Interestingly, it has red eyes that deeply stare back at you. The willowy neck, which can be drawn into the body when the bird is flying, stretches into an ‘S’ shape when at rest. There are no distinct variations in coloration or size between the males and females of this species.

3. Size
On average, the Black-headed Heron stands about 85 cms/33 inches tall. Its wingspan typically ranges from 150 to 185 cm or approximately 59 to 73 inches. The weight of this bird species differs slightly between the sexes, with males weighing in the range of 1.0-1.5 kg and females around 0.8-1.3 kg.

4. Habitat & Distribution
The Black-headed Heron is commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Its preferred habitats include grasslands, marshes, near water bodies, and open plains. It is also commonly seen in agricultural fields as it hunts for prey.

This bird species is quite versatile when it comes to its hunting technique. Unlike many other heron species, the Black-headed Heron hunts not only in water but also in dry fields, making it a proficient land predator. Interestingly, it is known to hunt by day as well as by night. The typical lifespan of a Black-headed Heron in the wild is estimated at around 15 years, although in captivity, they have been recorded to live up to 20 years.

In Kenya, the Black-headed Heron is known as “Korongo Kichwa-cheusi”, emphasizing its distinctive black head. Human interaction is minimal unless their habitat is encroached upon. Ecologically, Black-headed herons play a crucial role in controlling rodent populations and helping keep the ecosystems they inhabit healthy and balanced.
