Commonly known as the Loggerhead Shrike, its scientific (Latin) name is Lanius ludovicianus.

2. Appearance
This striking bird has a distinct black mask that covers its eyes and extends across the width of its head, a feature that has earned it the nickname ‘Butcher Bird’. It has a grey head, back and upper wings, while its underparts are pale. Its wings are black and feature a white patch. In flight, these patches considerably stand out. This bird flaunts a bill that’s hooked in the upper mandible, similar to a raptor, and its iris is dark. Males and females are similar in appearance.

3. Size
The Loggerhead Shrike generally measures 20-23 cm/8-9 inches in length. It weighs within the range of about 35 to 50 grams (1.2–1.8 oz). Its wingspan extends to an impressive 28-32 cm, that’s approximately from 11 to 13 inches.

The Loggerhead Shrike is found across North America, specifically from southern parts of Canada down through the U.S. to Mexico. Its population thrives in open habitats consisting of grasslands, savannas, deserts, and agricultural fields.

This fierce little bird can often be seen impaling its food on barbs, thorns or even wire fences.
